Ceramophone

Since playing the saxophone and making music is one of my greatest passions, I was curious which sounds could be created by a ceramic saxophone. I was inspired by the simplicity of the xaphoon – a small instrument, also called pocket saxophone. It is made out of a piece of bamboo with holes and a saxophone mouthpiece on one end.

I was also very inspired by Karl Seglem - a Norwegian saxophonist who plays on a saxophone mouthpiece that is attached to a goat horn. I studied different shapes of goat horns and created two ceramic saxophones - „ceramophones“. There is a small metal cylinder that is placed in the smaller opening and is covered with cork so that the saxophone mouthpiece fits perfectly. The warm sound of the instrument is very fascinating and it conveys a meditative and natural character.
